Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore how firms enter or exit B Corp certification faced with the tension between local and B Corp institutions, providing a better understanding of the unique impact of institutional complexity on B Corps' decision-making.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper applies multi-case analysis to 20 Chinese firms in various stages of B Corp certification, including eight certified B Corps, six decertified firms and six candidates. The qualitative data was used to code separately for two research questions.

Findings

The study findings reveal that: (1) Participants who can obtain expected social and economic benefits by innovating their operational mode to efficiently deal with this tension attempt to continuously pursue B Corp certification. A self-renewal model was developed to show how firms hybridize the two institutional logics; (2) Participants who find it hard to mitigate this tension tend to compromise with the local institution and conform less with the B Corp institution due to high opportunity and accounting costs, low short-term benefits and collective culture.

Originality/value

By highlighting the different responses of firms to institutional complexity, this study contributes to B Corp research, social identity theory and institutional complexity, providing practical implications for B Lab strategies in China.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reveal how Chinese private entrepreneurs behaved in a transition economy with a weak institutional environment to obtain organizational legitimacy.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on five consecutive nation‐wide surveys from 1997 to 2006 in China, the study provides empirical evidence and theoretical explanation on private entrepreneurs' behaviors in obtaining organizational legitimacy in China's transition economy.

Findings

The paper finds that the institutional environment in China's transition economy for private firms was weak. Specifically, weak property protection and Three Payouts showed a high risk of property confiscation for private firms; an under‐developed (discriminatory) financial system and a weak credit system had been big obstacles for the development of private firms, which resulted in debt chain among firms, a substitution for the weak financial system. Under such a hostile institutional environment where firms have been facing a high risk of organizational legitimacy, private entrepreneurs have great willingness to connect with government officers, participate in PC or CPPCC which are likely be politically connected, employ isomorphism in organizational structure, apply government‐oriented corporate social responsibility behaviors, on which they depend to obtain organizational legitimacy in transitional economy.

Originality/value

The paper exhibits the institutional environment in the past ten years in China's transition economy, and proposes the likely ways in which private entrepreneurs choose to establish legitimacy under a weak institutional environment.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce the history and major achievement of the Chinese private enterprise survey (CPES), which is one of the most enduring large-scale nationwide sample surveys in China, providing important micro firm-level data for understanding and studying the development of Chinese enterprises and entrepreneurs over the past 26 years.

Design/methodology/approach

The main body of this paper is based on a bibliometric analysis of all literature using CPES until 2017.

Findings

This paper discusses problems that users may encounter during data mining. By doing so, it can assist other researchers to get a better understanding of what has been done (e.g. journals, topics, scholars and institutions) and do their research in a more targeted way.

Research limitations/implications

As members of the survey project team, the authors also take a prospect of the future data design and use, as well as offer some suggestions about how to use the CPES data to improve high-quality development and business environment evaluation in China.

Originality/value

This paper is the first to provide an overall picture of academic papers in China and abroad that have used the CPES data.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of urea–formaldehyde (UF) nanoparticles on the barrier property and delamination resistance for epoxy coating in a 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution.

Design/methodology/approach

The UF resin was synthesized via sol–gel method, and UF/epoxy composite coating was prepared through ball-milling process; the microstructure and chemical composition of UF resin were observed using the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy; the bonding strength of coating/metal interface was investigated through adhesion test; the mechanical properties of the coatings were studied by tensile tests; and the barrier and corrosion resistance properties were verified using salt spray test, cathodic delamination test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements.

Findings

The experimental results indicated that the UF resin presented uniformly dispersed nanoparticles in the epoxy matrix and enhanced the bonding strength of coating/metal interface and then improved the delamination resistance for composite coating, which resulted in the enhancement of the barrier property and corrosion resistance for UF/epoxy composite coating.

Originality/value

In this paper, an easily prepared blending compounding coating with excellent corrosion resistance property was synthesized via sol–gel method and ball-milling process. The effects of UF nanoparticles on the barrier property and delamination resistance were investigated in detail.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study was to fabricate polyimide (PI)/Al2O3 composite films via surface modification and ion exchange techniques, and examine their properties.

Design/methodology/approach

The method involves hydrolyzing the PI film double surface layers in an aqueous potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution and incorporating aluminium ions (Al3+) into the hydrolyzed layers of the PI film via subsequent ion exchange, followed by a treatment of the Al3+-loaded PI films with an aqueous ammonia solution, which leads to the formation of Al(OH)3 in the surface-modified layers. After a final thermal annealing treatment in ambient air, the Al(OH)3 decomposes to Al2O3, and forms composite layers on both surfaces of the re-imidized PI film.

Findings

The PI/Al2O3 composite film obtained with a 6 hours of KOH treatment exhibited excellent thermal stability, good mechanical properties and better electric breakdown strength and corona-resistance properties than the pristine PI film.

Practical implications

The method for obtaining the composite films in this paper is worth consideration, but additional research will be needed. Furthermore, this method is of general importance for the fabrication of composite PI films with tailored properties.

Originality/value

This study showed that surface modification and ion-exchange techniques are powerful methodologies for the fabrication of PI/Al2O3 composite films.
